Two outages at Docklands data centres in as many days this week – affecting huge numbers of BT broadband customers – show loud and clear once again that London is just about the worst place for data centres. The widespread disruption this week is a sobering lesson that companies need to safeguard their business critical data and services well away from the capital and place them in low risk, highly resilient and ultra-secure facilities in less risky locations.

Docklands isn’t a bad place to store your precious data – it is a terrible place! The risks of flood, unstable power and the very real threat of terrorism, combined with the ultra high costs of both real estate and staff, should make Docklands the location of last resort. There are, of course, good reasons why some organisations need to use Docklands data centres. Those that require synchronous replication of data from the city, for example. But surely, even these organisations should look carefully at their synchronous data requirements and then put anything that doesn’t need synchronous replication somewhere that is far lower risk.

Of course, choosing an alternative isn’t easy. It may seem obvious to look at Slough or Reading, but these two locations are just a bit further down the same river as is quite likely to flood the Docklands. (According to the Environment Agency the risk is pretty high) So, they’re probably not that great an idea. Where else? Manchester? Hmm, similar problem.

What about Norwich? “Norwich? But it’s miles away”, we hear you cry. Actually no. Norwich is only 1 hour 45 minutes from London Liverpool Street  in the city – about the same amount of time as it would take to get to Reading from the same place by the time one has crossed London and got out there. “Ah yes! But the latency.” Hmm, not bad actually – a sub-4ms round trip to London is as good as you’ll get from one part of London to another. “Yes, but if I have to send my engineers out there it’ll take ages.” Actually, with our 24 hour support and ‘smart hands’ you really won’t need to send engineers out – although we are always happy to welcome them if they want to come and have a look! As one customer said when he was recently renewing his contract, “I love you as a supplier – I never see you because I never have to! Everything just works, but when I need help, you’re always there for me.”

There is always, then, the challenge of price. It is almost impossible to compare ‘apples with apples’ because every supplier prices differently. At MIGSOLV we don’t believe in hidden charges. The price you get is the price you pay. None of this, ‘Oh, you want monitoring? That’ll be another £50. Oh, you wanted a second supply in the rack? Of course, that’ll be another £100. Really? You wanted electronic locks to secure your racks? We’d be delighted, that’s just another £100 … per door’. And on it goes. Our pricing is easy. You pay one price for your rack and that’s it. The price includes monitoring , it includes an A and a B supply, it includes power strips with a mix of IEC C13, C19 and MK 3 pin sockets and with billing grade metering, it includes electronic locks front and rear with proximity card access, and it includes free installation. We don’t charge rental on cross connects and we don’t charge for supporting you, (‘smart hands’), because that’s what we’re there for – to serve our customers!

So. If you’re happy with all of the risks; the flood risk, the risk of outage, the security risk, the risk of terrorism. If you’re happy with the inflated cost of real estate, the high staffing costs and the premium that you pay for being in a high risk London data centre. Do nothing. You’ve made the right choice for your business.

If though, you aren’t happy with the risks. If you would rather that your data was in an ultra-secure, highly resilient, very low risk data centre with a sub four millisecond round trip to London, power from 100% renewable sources and award winning service, you should be talking to MIGSOLV … now!

Outages are never a happy time for anyone. But risks can be mitigated against and, for many organisations, they really should be.
