London is too high risk for Data Centres!

The UK has not been at such a high threat of terrorist activity for many years. The recent IS attacks in Paris demonstrate just how much the world is at risk. It is no secret that London is likely to be the main target of any terrorist activity in the UK and The Docklands is at particular risk.

The UK has not been at such a high threat of terrorist activity for many years. The recent IS attacks in Paris demonstrate just how much the world is at risk. It is no secret that London is likely to be the main target of any terrorist activity in the UK and The Docklands is at particular risk.

Any organisation, no matter what or where they come from, wanting to cause maximum disruption to UK Plc is likely to consider The Docklands as a viable target, partly because of the density of data centres in that area. The amount of data that is transmitted, stored and processed in the concentration of data centres in The Docklands makes major disruption to UK Plc highly inevitable in the event of an attack. It may be no coincidence that many of the attacks in Paris were concentrated around the St Denis area – an area which is highly populated with data centres.

Why Norwich?

Historically, some have said, “Why Norwich?”, or “Norwich is in the middle of nowhere!”, or “Norwich is impossible to get to”. The answers are simple – Norwich is a fantastic location for a data centre. Norwich is not a terrorist target, Norwich does not suffer from power problems, the MigSolv data centre is 39m above sea level and, being Norwich, it does not attract the premiums that being in London does.

Norwich is not in the middle of nowhere. In fact, Norwich is the very heart of East Anglia, it is ranked 4th for its number of internationally recognised scientists, (did you know that the Human Genome project is based in Norwich?), it is the only place in the UK outside of Oxford Street in London to have four national department stores and 420,000 people live within 30 minutes of the city centre.

So, how long are you going to continue to take risks with your business? Isn’t it time to take steps to ensure the security of your data? Will your business survive a total loss of service, (and potentially data)? London is a great city, it is a great place to do business, it is a major business and financial centre, it is not, however, a perfect location for a data centre in these times of significant terrorist threat.
